The Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA) is hosting a fashion exhibition called the “From Manchu to China Chic: the Evolution of the Qipao”. The third part of the exhibition, called “Turning Heads,” opened on Saturday Oct. 10, 2015 and will be celebrated with an opening reception on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The CHSA invites students to join the opening reception, which is free for students, to hear from the curator, Sally Yu Leung, and celebrate the opening of the exhibit.

The show features outfits from the 1890s to the 2000s, specializing in the Qipao, which is an extravagant mandarin gown. The form-fitting dress has a storied history that will be of interest to all fashion students, especially textile and costume design students. Attendees will learn that although people were once persecuted for wearing a Qipao during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the garment made a revival by the 1980s and the national dress is now known for its beautiful patterns and vivid colors. For more information visit the exhibition page.
