“This collection was inspired by the above collection of sculptures in the de Young Museum,” said Botshoma. “It is a collage of different colors and textures from various fabrics to show unity. These Central African sculptures were originally created with the purpose of mediating between the human and spirit worlds. Structural shapes embody the power and strength represented by these sculptures. My muse is named Luba after one of the tribes”

Great job Miriam and Laone!

The Discarded to Divine Sneak Preview will be at the the de Young Museum, Golden Gate Park, on April 9th. The Fashion Show & Auction will be at The Hall at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 1111 Gough Street, on April 29th.

Alumna has a cool ‘Art Space’

Allie Jeungyeon Ban (who recently got her MFA in textile design) is an avid member of MyArtSpace.com, “the premier online venue for contemporary” - and they liked her work. They liked her screen printed work SO much that they featured her on the front page of the site.

Some of Ban’s work that was featured on MyArtSpace.com

Considering the site has herds upon herds of artists trying to get featured, they only feature less than 5 percent of their artists on the front page media window - so this is pretty good news.

To make things even better for Allie, she will be headed to New York to intern for Cynthia Rowley.

It’s good to be Allie.

Brittney and Jie make their ‘Debut’

Debut, the New York store that is a haven for up and coming designers, has chosen not one - but two - of our alums to sell their collections that they showed in September.

Brittney Major won Debut New York’s inaugural Designer Open Call that they had earlier this year and to make matters better, the store decided to include Jie Pan’s collection into the mix as well.

In the upcoming year, Lisa Weiss (founder and owner of Debut New York) will grace the racks of her store with Brittney’s plaid-happy unconventional preppy collection and Jie’s mystical Anna Fidler pieces.

Congrats to both of them!

Academy of Art University Students ‘WOW’ New Zealand

The Montana World of WearableArt™ (WOW) Awards Show, which promotes the melding of art and fashion, held its 21st awards show at the end of September. A bevy of creative minds gathered in New Zealand to showcase everything from a garment constructed from hair to one made entirely of wood.

It was definitely a ‘WOW’ moment for Academy of Art University students Gina Digirolamo and Lindsey Eisentraut, who exhibited their creative cache and won the Shell Student Design Award and $5,000, for their jewelry design. The collaboration, entitled Bound, consisted of two models bound at the wrist in metal cuffs who wore an across the shoulders piece fashioned from metal wire and tubing atop neutral-tone ascetic attire. “This work represents our connection to the earth and each other - one human tribe plus our isolation and encapsulation as individuals,” said Digirolamo in a statement.

It was a look befitting a warrior princess.

And this isn’t the first time our school was honored, last year Liina Gruener (BFA Fashion Design) and Marjorie Cox, (BFA Textile Design) won the same award for their wooden dresses

The event was a global extravaganza with designers from around the world featuring 165 uniquely concepted, avant garde garments highlighted against a backdrop of graffiti, dancers, and theatrical performances. “I wish every design student from around the world could get the chance to see this show,” said judge Tsai Kang Yung in a statement, “to see how powerful the creative mind can be.”

Everyone could use a ‘Shaded View on Fashion Film’

ruth-hogben-gareth-pugh-86cd8Designer Rick Owens presided over A Shaded View on Fashion Film awards ceremony on the last day of Paris Fashion Week. The festival “shakes up the old rules of fashion by putting the focus on the moving image, in an industry long dominated by the ’still’ photographic medium” - hence the name of the festival. Think of it as fashion on a cinematic scale.

Held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Owens juried the competition with a landslide of fancy people including photographer Nan Goldin, actress and director Maria de Medeiros, curator and journalist Eric Troncy, journalist Laurent Goumarre, ad man Eric Tong Cuong and producer Hélène Ségol. Paris loves Ghazaleh Khalifeh

A Council of Fashion Designers of America award, featured on the Sartorialist and an injury at Paris Fashion Week (more on that later) - it has been quite a year for Ghazaleh Khalifeh.

ghazaleh4

It all started when Ghazaleh was awarded with the $25,000 Geoffrey Beene Design Scholarship Award from the CFDA (that’s a lot of money). She was presented with the award in June 2008 at the CFDA Awards Gala where she rubbed elbows with Carolina Herrera, Peter Som and CFDA Queen Bee (i.e. President) Diane von Furstenberg

As an added bonus, she received the French Exchange Scholarship to attend L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne - and she is did pretty well in the City of Light.

“At L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne we had to create a grand thesis/senior collection to the president of the school, professors and professionals in the industry,” she says. “Out of over sixty students, I received the highest score!” Read more…
