The World According to Harry: Don’t Believe the Prada Hype

Please give a warm welcome to our newest blogger Harry Go! He will be delivering witty banter on the world of culture, fashion and everything else in between. In his first piece puts the spotlight on Prada’s Fall 2010 show - and the boring “hype” it caused with its models

Last week, the Prada Fall 2010 show was held in Milan and it was streamed live on their website — but it was really bad.

Before the show started, there was a hype created by the Internet world. People were saying that this season’s models will shock the audiences and they would be Prada’s answer to CFDA’s size and age question.

What was Prada up to? Were they going to import plus-size models? Or maybe they were going to bring in some old models. And by old, I mean real old. Like Carol Alt or even Twiggy. I was hoping for lots and lots of models of color. It wouldn’t be an answer to CFDA’s size and age issue, but it would still be a shocker.

On the day of the show, people in Milan noticed that Victoria’s Secret models were flying in to Milan on the day of the big show. I hoped that this wasn’t the shocker. Unfortunately it was.

Miranda Kerr walked Balenciaga and Adriana Lima has walked in Givenchy. Plus, Alessandra Ambrósio, Karolina Kurkova, Izabel Goulart and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley all walked in Giles Fall 2010.

There was nothing exciting about this. We expected more from you Miuccia - especially with all this unnecessary hype

Alessandra, Miranda and Bianca Balti have the similar body type to Prada’s new favorite gals Lindsey Wixson or Rasa Zukauskaite . They probably have a little bit more in the breast and curve area, but it’s not too obvious. The only mild—or semi-mild—shocker was Doutzen Kroes who was visibly a little bit bigger than the rest of the cast.

Based on this, it looks like the house of Prada is trying hard to remove themselves from bad stereotypes. After casting all Caucasian girls in Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 (unless the Brazilian beauty, Isabeli, counted as a model of color), Prada thought they can get away with it by playing a hip-hop song and putting two Asian models (Liu Wen and Shu Pei Qin) and an an African-American model (Lyndsey Scott) for the Spring 2010 show. FSD is on the Hunt For a Photoblogger

Fashion School Daily is looking for a photographer to join the ranks of our bloggers - and we’re not just talking about any photographer. We want a bonafide photojournalist who can capture trends, style and fashion on the street with a very distinct story and perspective.

picture-2

Although we love The Sartorialist and similar street style blogs, we are looking for a person who is cut from the same cloth as Tommy Ton of JakAndJil who takes pics for Style.com. You can also look at the work from “On the Street” a segment of street style in the New York Times by photographer Bill Cunningham.

We want a photographer who spots trends and the unique details of fashion on the street - and knows how to take a really good picture of it. We aren’t just looking for cool pictures of a girl who looks pretty. We want context!!!

So if you are interested in becoming the FSD photoblogger, read the requirements:

1.) You must be a current student or an alumni of the school.
2.) You do not need to be in San Francisco Bay Area to apply. If you are an online student in Tokyo, we definitely want to see what you have to bring to the table.
3.) You must be able to write a little blurb to accompany your pictures. Tell us why this picture is relevant. What made it catch your eye? You can also go beyond that and create a slideshow like Bill Cunningham.
4.) You must be able to meet deadlines and turn in a post on a weekly basis.
5.) Have an eye for details and distinct style.
6.) Have knowledge of fashion.

If you are interested please send us a brief bio as well as samples of your work. In addition, send us THREE street style photos along with a brief explanation of each.

Please submit all your material to fashionschooldaily@gmail.com by 5 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2010. You will be contacted if you’re the chosen one!

Now go out there and take some cool pictures!

Run away with ‘The Runaways’

RUNOS_Festival1-Sheet_27x40.indd

Forget Alice and her kid-friendly trippy Wonderland - it’s all about The Runaways.

The movie doesn’t come out until March 19, but mark it in your calendar. Mark it now.

The Real Runaways

The Hollywood Runaways

If you haven’t heard about it already, it is partly a “coming-of-age” story and stars Twilight diva Kristen Stewart and Dakota “she’s-to-good-of-an-actor-for-her age” Fanning. The rock biopic follows the start, the rise and the fall of ’70s the first all-girl rock band that included Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. It’s pretty darn gritty, rebellious, anarchic and grimy - and that makes it a lot of fun!

Focus On Your Closet: Spring Cleaning Begins!
Give 2, Take 1

Start cleaning out your closets and setting aside clothes and accessories for the April 17th clothing swap and clothing drive hosted by Beyond the Front Row (fashion club) and the St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco. This event, Give 2, Take 1 (“G2T1”), will function as a fundraiser for the club, and a charitable clothing-drive for St. Vincent’s community programs.

Here’s the deal: for every 2 items donated, donors get to take (or ‘swap’) 1 item in return - hence the name “Give 2, Take 1”. All items remaining at the end of the April 17th swap will be donated to St. Vincent’s. This fun sustainable–charitable event also happens to coincide with Earth Day! Collection of donations begins the last week of March, on campus and elsewhere. Details to follow.
Please note: Clothing and accessories donations will happily be accepted, regardless of participation in the clothing swap. St. Vincent’s is in urgent need of men’s clothing - additional donations from the closets of boyfriends, husbands, brothers, and sons would be greatly appreciated!

Rob Curry donates to ‘Perpetual Indulgence’

On Sunday, School of Fashion instructor Rob Curry donated a coat (that he made) to a fundraiser organized by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group of guys who use drag and Catholic imagery to bring awareness to social conflict and sexual tolerance.

Held at Wild Side West, the event raised funds for breast cancer and Rob’s coat was auctioned off for $500. A total of $3500 was raised at the event - and Rob couldn’t be any more excited about his coat and the socially conscious drag nuns.

Mike Feeney gives us a show at the 79 Gallery

Mike Feeney, along with fellow MFA fine art and sculpture students Lindsey Eisentraut and Chanil Hong will be showcasing their sculptural works at the 79 Gallery starting March 4.

1

Feeney’s pieces include individual units, which are assembled to create mechanical sculptures - but as you all may or may not know, he made a shoulder piece that was worn by Lady Gaga in her “Poker Face” video. It’s a far cry from Kermit the Frog dresses and crazy lace masks that cover your entire face - maybe even a little classier.

pokerfacefeeney

I guess we can just call him Mike “Poker Face” Feeney.

The opening reception takes place Thursday March 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The 79 Gallery is located at 79 New Montgomery.

Walter Van Beirendonck’s #1 fan

In the latest issue of One Eighty, journalism student, Kalla Vieaux penned the article “The Cult of Walter” which features a band of merry men who adore the designer (who is 1/6th of the Antwerp Six) - one of them being merchandising student Jefery Jones.

4

Now when I say that Jefery adores Walter, I am serious. Very serious. If Walter was a religion, Jefery would probably be the pope. He has 50 pieces from Walter’s past collections and he tries to wear at least one piece a day.

“Wearing Walter makes me feel like a magic symbol-wielding shaman,” Jefery told Kalla. “I feel expressive and just plain happy.”

Unfortunately we weren’t able to fit any pictures of Jefery’s Walter wardrobe homage in the mag, but thanks to the Internet, we can fit all of them on our blog!

Follow the jump to view a slideshow of all of Jefery’s Walter looks. Read more…
