The Life of a Grid Suit

Grid suits are a teaching tool developed by School of Fashion Executive Director Gladys Perint Palmer, to help teach students how to draw the body. As the name suggests, it is a body suit with grid lines drawn on it, helping students to draw the body proportionately and accurately. Illustration Coordinator Carol Nunnelly took the grid suits home the other day to wash them, giving them their own little adventure: from drying in a garden, to the body, to paper.

Top Row: The Gridsuit hanging in Carol’s garden, and being modeled by Mia Paschal

Bottom Row: Drawings by Natalie Chiu Sze Wai (L) and Kristina Fielding (R)

MBFW On the Street – Part 2

Shoes, Hats, and Headgear

Ah shoes… they can make an outfit, or break your heel. But, no matter how sky-high, I didn’t see a single girl (or boy) take a tumble. In fact, I saw more trip-ups on the runway than I did on the streets. These guys and gals were rocking it in everything from studs to metallic’s, to animal print and… ice skate hybrids? No matter the style, there was plenty of risk involved… and it made a great show.

Colors to Wear For Fall 2011: A Fashion Infographic

fall-fashion-colors-final1

Back when I lived in DC, August was the month when I was ready to throw my overused tank tops and flip-flops in a trash barrel and burn them. After months of excessive heat, when all you can wear is the barest form of body-covering, August would give me the hope that one day I would layer my clothing again and, perhaps, even wear a sweater. Although, now, I live in San Francisco and have lost all meaning of the word “summer”.

For those of you who are ready to stop thinking about the scorching heat wave and start shopping for fall clothes, here’s my advice to you: buy something black. In fact, if you want to be totally on trend, buy something in these colors:

  • Black
  • White
  • Grey
  • Dark Teal
  • Dark Red

If these are too dark for you, buy a few accent pieces in:

  • Coral red
  • Cobalt blue

How do I know this? Becuase I counted to see how often these colors were used in the fall collections of 32 ready-to-wear designers and labels (see graphics for the full list). According to the book Fashion Forecasting by Evelyn L. Brannon, designers tend to use color palettes in a predictable pattern, or cycle. I’m in the process of checking this out now – so stay tuned – but, if this is true, it means that spring fashions will use a lot of black, white, and grey.

A ‘Dazed and Confused’ Flashback: the Beastie Boys

As one of our favorite magazines, Dazed and Confused always has some great content — visually and content-wise.

It’s even more enjoyable to scroll through their Tumblr account. When we found this “retro” cover from 1997 featuring the too-cool-for-school Beastie Boys, we just HAD to share it:

wwwdazeddigital

Is 1997 REALLY considered retro?

Either way, it’s so cool to see classic covers like this…

Taking a ‘Magic Trip’ is Always Fun

magic-trip-movie-image-04-600x337

We are all about stylish, retro-stained documentaries with a purpose — particularly one by the name of Magic Trip:

Read over the synopsis and I guarantee it will tickle your fancy:

Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood’s MAGIC TRIP is a freewheeling portrait of Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster’s fabled road trip across America in the legendary Magic Bus. In 1964, Ken Kesey, the famed author of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” set off on a legendary, LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World’s Fair. He was joined by “The Merry Band of Pranksters,” a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac’s “On the Road,” and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus. Kesey and the Pranksters intended to make a documentary about their trip, shooting footage on 16MM, but the film was never finished and the footage has remained virtually unseen. With MAGIC TRIP, Gibney and Ellwood were given unprecedented access to this raw footage by the Kesey family. They worked with the Film Foundation, HISTORY and the UCLA Film Archives to restore over 100 hours of film and audiotape, and have shaped an invaluable document of this extraordinary piece of American history.

magic

Counterculture? Renegades? Pranksters? A Magic Bus? We are in! (but we don’t condone the whole LSD thing — but it was a “different time” back then).

Take a gander at the trailer for the full effect:

The movie is currently available On Demand or, if you prefer, you can wait till it opens in theaters on August 5.
