Picture This by GPP

On July 8th I will be in London to meet curators at the Victoria and Albert Museum where Oriole Cullen is working on a John Galliano exhibition and another curator is planning an Eighties London Fashion exhibition. Abraham Thomas, who is in charge of the Fashion Illustration collection, recently wrote me:

I was hoping to speak to you about your wide collection of fashion drawings - I think they are wonderful, and we would be most honoured to welcome them into the V&A’s permanent collections.

I think they would be a fantastic resource for future researchers and students who visit our Study Rooms, and I would also be able to include them in my upcoming book on the V & A’s collection of fashion drawings and photographs (forthcoming, 2012).

In 2007, the Victoria and Albert Museum celebrated its 150th anniversary and invited 150 artists to participate. For this, each of us was sent three sheets of beautiful handmade paper. My contribution was a page from my St. Martin’s sketchbook. The words around the image are self-explanatory.

As a student, I had forgotten to identify or date the drawing. Without much hope, I scanned and emailed the page to the V & A. I had an answer the next day. The embroidery I painted was in storage but it happened to be the textile curator’s favourite piece (amongst literally thousands of items belonging on exhibit and in storage).

One more thing: John Galliano is famous around the V & A library and Study Rooms for his prodigious research for Christian Dior and his own label.

The World According to Harry: The Great Impersonation

When it comes to pop culture, I really am behind. I stopped checking Perez Hilton since November 17, 2009, when he lied about Doutzen Kroes. He claimed: “We’ve been a big Doutzen fan for years,” but on May 1, 2008 he asked the world, “Who is Doutzen Kroes????????“

I like bitchy people, but I can’t stand liars.

That’s why when I saw an editorial of Kristen Wiig in V Magazine, her name didn’t ring a bell. So to prevent a similar “Perez” incident, I Google her.

Sally Lyndley styled Kristen to channel Carmen Miranda, Brigitte Bardot and my favorite, Frida Kahlo (the one and only person who wore and actually rocked the unibrow to date). Tom Allen shot the images:

I always love editorials like this. My favorites are when Snejana Onopka played Anna Wintour and when Sasha Pivovarova played John Galliano, both were photographed for French Vogue. I almost cried when I saw the Snejana as Anna Wintour. Not literally. I almost shed a tear because they’re just that brilliant.

The World According to Harry: The Great Balenciaga Scandal

We all heard the news that French Vogue was blacklisted from Balenciaga. Even Editor-in-Chief, Carine Roitfeld confirmed, “We’re blacklisted. It’s too bad, it’s a beautiful house and it’s French. I hope that it’s not forever.”

Word on the Parisian street is that creative director Nicolas Ghesquière and his team at Balenciaga is pissed off at the fact that Roitfeld fired Marie-Amélie Sauvé who was a stylist for French Vogue and a very close friend of Ghesquière. That could be the root of the feud. However, many noticed that Sauvé is now on American Vogue’s masthead!

Sauvé left French Vogue for American Vogue? This is a whole new story. It could be like The Real Life Devil Wears Prada.

Another more convincing word on the street says that Carine allegedly asked Balenciaga for their samples to be shot in an editorial. Apparently, one of the coats ended up at Max Mara’s design studio and rumor says the the coat was copied and then sent back to Balenciaga. Read more…

Suzy Menkes puts our designers at the ‘Head of the Class’

Suzy Menkes, fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune and a one-time guest of the school, gave our show a nod of acknowledgment with a write up for the New York Times:

steven-nytimesChris Moore/Karl Prouse

While New York fashion tends toward the dutifully wearable, the San Francisco-based fashion college gave food for thought. How was it possible that clothes from six selected students, with global origins in the United States, Russia and Asia, could seem more inventive and creative than established New York brands?

Now that’s a compliment if I’ve ever heard one.

Remembering Daul Kim

08b-jee-hyoung-jang-jewelry-quoc-lieu-photo-randy-brooke-copyDaul Kim had a very strong presence. Her striking eyes glared down a runway as she walked effortlessly with sophistication and the perfect amount of allure.

She knew how to do her job. And she did it well.

The School of Fashion was sad to hear of Daul’s death. Next agency confirmed that the 20-year old model was found dead in her Paris apartment this morning. The agency said in a statement “She was a top model and a great friend to all of us at Next. Please respect her family’s privacy at this time of sadness. We will all miss her very much.”

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Daul modeled at esteemed shows such as Chanel, Dries Van Noten, Margiela, and Lacoste. We were more than happy to have her model in a handful of School of Fashion shows including the San Francisco graduation fashion show in April 2007 and our New York Fashion Week shows in September 2007 and February 2008.

“She was a true creative spirit who was equally an artist and a model”, said Director of Fashion Simon Ungless. “She always asked how our young designers were doing and was genuinely interested in their conceptual process and how a design was created.”

View a slideshow of Daul from our runways shows. (All photos by Randy Brooke).
