School of Fashion Celebrates Fashion’s Night Out with Neiman Marcus

You may have heard of a little thing called Fashion’s Night Out, which was spearheaded by Vogue editrix Anna Wintour.

nm-fno

Well, our fashion school will be participating in the worldwide event (like they did last year) with Neiman Marcus in San Francisco’s Union Square.

Here are the events you should already have in your calendar:

Thursday, September 3rd- Tuesday, September 13th: In honor of Fashion’s Night Out, Neiman Marcus’ Stockton Street windows will exhibit the highly anticipated new issue of the School of Fashion’s 180 magazine, as well as select garments from graduates Sabah Mansoor Husain and Marina Solomatnikova that debuted during the Academy Art University Fall / Winter ’10 show at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

Friday, September 10th
6:00pm – 8:00pm
Fashion’s Night Out at Neiman Marcus

The School of Fashion joins Neiman Marcus, exclusively, for Fashion’s Night Out. Faculty, students, and graduates will be on each floor throughout Neiman Marcus with exhibits, collections, and demonstrations. Open to the public.

Here are some iPhone snapshots of the windows (which, as noted above, are already up for public viewing):

In addition to these swanky windows, Friday night’s event will include knitwear demos, textile demos, featured projects from the creative minds of our students, tambour beading, music, food, and much more. And let’s not forget the debut of the newest (and epic) issue of 180 magazine (there’s a window for that too):

So prep yourself for Friday, it will surely be an FNO hot spot!

That Guy is Bob Guccione

The gentleman that was pictured in this week’s Who’s That? Contest is Bob Guccione founder and publisher of the naughty adult mag, Penthouse.

We had a ton of people guess, but Julia was the only one who guessed correctly — so kudos to Julia!

Here is a breakdown of the clues I gave you:

Clue #1: Spin – His son, Bob Guccione Jr. was the editor of Spin magazine.

Clue #2: Vanessa Williams – One issue of Penthouse included unauthorized photos of the actress/singer which caused her to resign as Miss America in 1984.

Clue #3: Sci-Fi – Guccione also created a science fiction magazine called Omni.

And P.S. — Consider this a tiny sneak preview of the next issue of One Eighty magazine.

You’re welcome.

The Kalla Chronicles: The Sweet, Small Moments of Academy of Art University Fashion Week (Special Edition)

pict0334

How to recover from fashion week.

The Academy of Art University’s fashion week passed in a blur of events, all of which I carefully blocked out on my semi-tacky Anne Taintor calendar. As I reflect on the week over a pot of coffee and spoonfuls of Nutella, I’m starting to realize that it’s the sweet, small moments that count.

The biggest of the “small” moments was participating in a roundtable discussion with Suzy Menkes and 5 of my fellow journalism students on Wednesday morning. Suzy’s engaging verbal command makes it feel like every word she divulges is an intimate secret. One of those secrets was that Madonna has been reading Suzy’s book The Windsor Style in preparation for an upcoming movie role as the Duchess of Windsor. Thank goodness I snatched the out-of-print book from the library before Gladys Perint Palmer shared our “secret” with the rest of the School of Fashion.

The next exciting small moment was being approached by Walter Van Beirendonck at the static show (the show before the big fashion show). I wrote about Walter in my very first published article (in One Eighty) so shaking Walter’s bauble-laden hand was a definite milestone. The only person more excited to shake Walter’s hand was the recipient of an unexpected internship he offered.

Finally, it was time to watch the show, which I got to share with my friend of the last 5 years, graduating designer Emma Erickson (who scored an internship with Hervé Léger.) She guided me through the show with encouraging commentary such as “You’ll like this collection… it’s what you’d buy if you could have whatever you wanted.”

But, for that moment, standing in the nosebleed section of the bleachers and witnessing the camaraderie and pats on the back between this year’s group of close knit graduating designers, I had everything I wanted.

Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Van Saene Descend Upon the School of Fashion

walterdirk

As you already know, Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Van Saene will be our special guests for our May show. As 1/3 of the Antwerp Six, the duo are influential designers — but let me back up a bit.

For those of you who don’t know who the Antwerp Six is, now is a better time than ever to find out. The Antwerp Six is a group of avant garde designers who graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The six included Walter and Dirk (of course) as well as Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs, and Marina Yee. The sextet of designers shared a radical and unique vision of fashion and have a cult following that rivals that of Justin Bieber. Read more…

Keanan Duffty Talks About Being a ‘Rebel’

keananduffty

Keanan Duffty, the award winning British fashion designer, will be a part of the huge guest list we have coming to our school in May. He will be doing a special panel discussion at 3 p.m. on Wednesday May 5 where he will discuss his book, Rebel Rebel: Anti-Style. Tracing the roots of rebel style to the music scene, the presentation will explore how fashionable music and “anti-fashion” icons, like David Bowie, the Sex Pistols, and Gwen Stefani, have inspired fashion.

rebelrebel

The book covers a wide range of iconic pieces that embody “anti-style.” The classic leather jacket (think Brando or Joan Jett) remains a symbol of “outsider-dom,” while jeans have been reimagined as a style centerpiece by every generation. The skirt is constantly being reappraised, whether it’s mini, peasant, or frou-frou, to simultaneously celebrate and subvert images of femininity. Rebel, Rebel is the anti-style bible that will inspire the next generation of designers, fashionistas, and club kids alike.

I know you’re craving for more information about him — so here are a couple of tidbits for you to chew on:

- He won the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award in 2003
- He is the Creative Director of “Keanan Duffty For Target,” which sold at over 1200 Target stores across America.
- He is the Creative Director for Ben Sherman tailored clothing, consulted for Nautica and Dockers, and collaborated with Aveda, Reebok, Gola, and Dr. Martens footwear.
- Duffty’s clothes have a celebrity following that includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Aerosmith, The New York Dolls, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Elizabeth Jagger, Steven Dorff, Jimmy Fallon, Smashing Pumpkins, among others.
- Polina Pfliger, a Fashion Merchandising major, interviewed him for our latest issue of One Eighty (the piece can be seen in the slide show below)

Here are the full details of the panel discussion:

Walter Van Beirendonck’s #1 fan

In the latest issue of One Eighty, journalism student, Kalla Vieaux penned the article “The Cult of Walter” which features a band of merry men who adore the designer (who is 1/6th of the Antwerp Six) – one of them being merchandising student Jefery Jones.

4

Now when I say that Jefery adores Walter, I am serious. Very serious. If Walter was a religion, Jefery would probably be the pope. He has 50 pieces from Walter’s past collections and he tries to wear at least one piece a day.

“Wearing Walter makes me feel like a magic symbol-wielding shaman,” Jefery told Kalla. “I feel expressive and just plain happy.”

Unfortunately we weren’t able to fit any pictures of Jefery’s Walter wardrobe homage in the mag, but thanks to the Internet, we can fit all of them on our blog!
