Monday Morning Photos

Today’s Monday Morning Photos features some of the standout looks from the Dior Spring ’12 Haute Couture Collection. Since John Galliano’s departure last spring, there has been a flurry of speculation as to who would replace the talented designer. For the past two seasons, Bill Gaytten, Galliano’s right hand man, has been at the helm, but many felt he lacked the vision and confidence to carry the iconic brand – but this collection may prove otherwise. He turned out stunning gowns and cocktail dresses, and wearable day suits referencing the signature Dior look. “It’s meant to be x-ray Dior,” Gaytten explained. “All of the structure of iconic Dior… but all of it see-through.” Does this mean that the speculation as to who will fill Galliano’s shoes is over? We’ll have to wait and see!

We’ll Take Manhattan

Filmmaker John McKay has been working on a new biopic that follows the famed photographer David Bailey on a trip to NYC with an as yet undiscovered Jean Shrimpton. This video from NOWNESS takes viewers behind the scenes as McKay and the film’s stars wander the streets of New York, recreating the iconic images. The photo shoot was revolutionary at the time, showcasing the grittier aspects of New York and embodying the liberated spirit of the decade.

Inspired by Van Gogh

Here is another photoshoot from Flore Morton’s Styling 1 class – and it was inspired by the master painter Vincent Van Gogh! Each photo replicates an aspect of one of his paintings, whether it is color, light, or the subject. We love the way that they abstracted a single element from each work of art, and used that as inspiration to create something completely different. The photo shoot was styled by Anita Long and Uma Anupindi, one of our exchange students from the National Institute of Technology (NIFT) in India, and shot by BFA Photography student Bailey Harada Stone. Natasha Bacon, from City Models, brings the images to life. Enjoy!

Projects from Our Styling Students

Inspiration for the Photo Shoot

The following is a final project from three of Flore Morton’s Styling 1 students – Jessica Mongeau, Phyllis Smith, and Alex Grant. They were inspired by 1920s boudoir images, and were able to link up with photography student Jeff Bacani, whose work also has a vintage feel. He used an old Polaroid camera that had been converted to create digital files. The images are very rustic, and the long exposures capture movement in a blur.

Occupy Fashion

Students from Flore Morton’s styling class took to the streets of San Francisco for their inspiration – literally. Students Hannah Tutton, Diana Byrd, and Brie Sloan, and photographer Anthony Rogers, created an editorial influenced by the Occupy SF movement (with the help of the gorgeous Svetlana from FORD Models). They celebrate the bohemian chic style of the movement’s best-dressed recessionistas, who maintain their sartorial splendor through it all!

Peter Nguyen at Vancouver Fashion Week

On November 4th, I had the wonderful opportunity of showing my collection at Vancouver Fashion Week. It was a crash course in casting models, doing fittings, selecting hair & makeup and styling. There were a lot of things that the Academy of Art University fashion school covered during my graduate show that I got to experience and learn for myself at Vancouver Fashion Week. Luckily everything ran smoothly with the help of my team who traveled from California and the VFW team, Jamal Abdourahman and Paradise Kafri.

I was in Vancouver for a week preparing for the show and also managed to squeeze in a mini vacation with my team. I spent my first day in Vancouver hunting for shoes and exploring Vancouver.

Most of the shopping day was spent on Robson Street. A street packed with shops, cafes and five Starbucks.

One of my favorite neighborhood is Gastown. The historic neighborhood had such special feel with its Victorian buildings and cobblestone streets contrasted by modern furniture stores and architecture firms.
