The Creators Project came to San Francisco last weekend and brought with them some some stellar art, music, and of course, technology. For today’s Monday Morning Photos, we’re giving you a peek at one of the most amazing installations at the festival. The famous face pictured is well known for constantly pushing the boundaries of music, performance, gender, and celebrity – and at The Creators Project, their work was re-imagined in a whole new way.

On Saturday, March 3rd, the Academy of Art University put on an Open Studio – a chance for people in the area to come visit the School and see what we’re all about! At the School of Fashion, instructors set up various activities for visitors to partake in – from making textiles to knitting samples. Flore Morton set up a workshop where people were able to style their own photo shoots, and we’ve got some of the photos! They assembled looks from pieces designed by Rob Curry’s M.F.A. Construction 3 class, and were even able to choose hair and makeup looks.
Peep some of our faves below!

A week ago, we told you about some changes going on in the fashion industry – Raf Simons was unceremoniously dumped by Jil Sander, and Stefano Pilati was ousted from Yves Saint Laurent. While we knew that Raf was going to be replaced by Jil, no official announcement had been made as to who would replace Stefano – until yesterday.

Today’s edition of Monday Morning Photos was inspired by ’60s bombshell Jean Shrimpton. We’ll Take Manhattan, the BBC movie chronicling her relationship with famed photographer David Bailey, aired this weekend on the Ovation channel – did you catch it? Not only was it an outstanding film, it also featured illustrations from our very own Gladys Perint Palmer. If you didn’t see it, you’ll have another chance this Wednesday! It airs at 5:00 and 7:00 PM, so be sure to tune in.

There’s something about fashion shows that just never gets old. You feel like a kid in a candy shop and sometimes you really don’t know where to look because you’re torn between multiple moments that beckon your attention.
The Academy of Art University show was bursting with those moments.
From the team backstage employing their artistry with hair and make up to the outstanding collections the design graduates produced, the show was a smashing success. I agree with Diana Vreeland that “fashion must be the intoxicating release from the banality of the world,” for fashion and style are a duet of inspiration and feeling that certainly distract from the dreary day. Once the runway is before you, you can’t help but be taken over by fashion. The Academy of Art University show was full of this kind of intoxication.

For today’s edition of Monday Morning Photos, we were inspired by the weekend’s biggest event, the 84th Annual Academy Awards. Mark Bridges took home the Oscar for Best Costume Design for The Artist, and while we were very happy for Mr. Bridges – the clothes in the film were amazing – we couldn’t help but be a bit distracted by the backdrop which featured a sketch by famed costume designer Edith Head. The dress pictured was worn by Grace Kelly in the Alfred Hitchcock film Rear Window, and is one of the most memorable dresses in film – which is why we wanted to share it with you!

Grace Kelly was truly a vision in the dress.

The woman pictured above, surrounded by her beautiful photographs, is fashion photographer Lillian Bassman. She gained notoriety as a fashion photographer in the 1940s and ’50s, and was one of the only female photographers in the industry. Her photographs are some of the most influential works of the 20th century, she was known for creating a stark contrast between dark and light. Richard Avedon once described her style as rendering “visible that heartbreaking invisible place between the appearance and the disappearance of things.”
She became disillusioned with the profession in the late 1960s, as models became supermodels. “They were not my kind of models. They were dictating rather than taking direction,” she later said. She destroyed many of her negatives during this period, and left the world of fashion photography behind. But, in the early 1990s, a bag of her old negatives was found in her garage by Martin Harrison, a fashion curator and historian who was staying at her home. He encouraged her to re-examine them, and she was once again inspired. Using various printing techniques to transform the images, Bassman developed her photographs, and gained popularity with a new generation. Sadly, Mrs. Bassman died on February 13th, at the age of 94. Fortunately we have her photographs to admire and inspire us.
Follow the jump for the answers to the clues and to see some of Lillian Bassman’s greatest photographs!
