The Kalla Chronicles: The Sweet, Small Moments of Academy of Art University Fashion Week (Special Edition)

pict0334

How to recover from fashion week.

The Academy of Art University’s fashion week passed in a blur of events, all of which I carefully blocked out on my semi-tacky Anne Taintor calendar. As I reflect on the week over a pot of coffee and spoonfuls of Nutella, I’m starting to realize that it’s the sweet, small moments that count.

The biggest of the “small” moments was participating in a roundtable discussion with Suzy Menkes and 5 of my fellow journalism students on Wednesday morning. Suzy’s engaging verbal command makes it feel like every word she divulges is an intimate secret. One of those secrets was that Madonna has been reading Suzy’s book The Windsor Style in preparation for an upcoming movie role as the Duchess of Windsor. Thank goodness I snatched the out-of-print book from the library before Gladys Perint Palmer shared our “secret” with the rest of the School of Fashion.

The next exciting small moment was being approached by Walter Van Beirendonck at the static show (the show before the big fashion show). I wrote about Walter in my very first published article (in One Eighty) so shaking Walter’s bauble-laden hand was a definite milestone. The only person more excited to shake Walter’s hand was the recipient of an unexpected internship he offered.

Finally, it was time to watch the show, which I got to share with my friend of the last 5 years, graduating designer Emma Erickson (who scored an internship with Hervé Léger.) She guided me through the show with encouraging commentary such as “You’ll like this collection… it’s what you’d buy if you could have whatever you wanted.”

But, for that moment, standing in the nosebleed section of the bleachers and witnessing the camaraderie and pats on the back between this year’s group of close knit graduating designers, I had everything I wanted.

A Talk With Suzy Menkes: ‘If Fashion is for Everyone – is it Fashion?’

suzy-menkesClasses on Thursday May 6 at 10 a.m. might be bare because the School of Fashion students will probably be at Morgan Auditorium for the discussion with Suzy Menkes, Fashion Editor of the International Herald Tribune and guest of honor at this year’s graduation fashion show. Executive Director of Fashion, Gladys Perint Palmer’s discussion with Menkes will center on the question, “If Fashion is for Everyone — is it Fashion?”

In a one-on-one interview (similar to last year’s event), they will discuss the accessibility of fashion, the future of newspapers and magazines, blogging, luxury, sustainability, and young designers wanting to set up their own brands.

Here are the discussion details just in case you missed them the first time:

Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Van Saene Descend Upon the School of Fashion

walterdirk

As you already know, Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Van Saene will be our special guests for our May show. As 1/3 of the Antwerp Six, the duo are influential designers — but let me back up a bit.

For those of you who don’t know who the Antwerp Six is, now is a better time than ever to find out. The Antwerp Six is a group of avant garde designers who graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The six included Walter and Dirk (of course) as well as Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs, and Marina Yee. The sextet of designers shared a radical and unique vision of fashion and have a cult following that rivals that of Justin Bieber. Read more…

Keanan Duffty Talks About Being a ‘Rebel’

keananduffty

Keanan Duffty, the award winning British fashion designer, will be a part of the huge guest list we have coming to our school in May. He will be doing a special panel discussion at 3 p.m. on Wednesday May 5 where he will discuss his book, Rebel Rebel: Anti-Style. Tracing the roots of rebel style to the music scene, the presentation will explore how fashionable music and “anti-fashion” icons, like David Bowie, the Sex Pistols, and Gwen Stefani, have inspired fashion.

rebelrebel

The book covers a wide range of iconic pieces that embody “anti-style.” The classic leather jacket (think Brando or Joan Jett) remains a symbol of “outsider-dom,” while jeans have been reimagined as a style centerpiece by every generation. The skirt is constantly being reappraised, whether it’s mini, peasant, or frou-frou, to simultaneously celebrate and subvert images of femininity. Rebel, Rebel is the anti-style bible that will inspire the next generation of designers, fashionistas, and club kids alike.

I know you’re craving for more information about him — so here are a couple of tidbits for you to chew on:

- He won the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award in 2003
- He is the Creative Director of “Keanan Duffty For Target,” which sold at over 1200 Target stores across America.
- He is the Creative Director for Ben Sherman tailored clothing, consulted for Nautica and Dockers, and collaborated with Aveda, Reebok, Gola, and Dr. Martens footwear.
- Duffty’s clothes have a celebrity following that includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Aerosmith, The New York Dolls, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Elizabeth Jagger, Steven Dorff, Jimmy Fallon, Smashing Pumpkins, among others.
- Polina Pfliger, a Fashion Merchandising major, interviewed him for our latest issue of One Eighty (the piece can be seen in the slide show below)

R.I.P. Malcolm McLaren

A young McLaren stands in front of the famous SEX shop located on London’s Kings Road

Punk pioneer, Malcolm McLaren passed away today in New York City. McLaren was music impresario and the manager of the iconic band, the Sex Pistols. On the fashion front, he was also known for opening London’s “Let it Rock” clothing boutique (which would later be renamed SEX) with fashion designer and one-time guest of our school, Dame Vivienne Westwood.
