Street Style: Art Basel

Art Basel is the most important annual gathering in Florida for the influential international fashion and art community. In the chilly winter month of December, many seek to leave their cold winter for the warm oasis that is Miami. This amalgamation of heavenly weather, art, music, and culture produces four days of pure fashion bliss. However, the best part of Art Basel is that the artwork extends beyond what can be found at the Convention Center, Red Dot, and Wynwood galleries, for the people who take part in Basel are art forms themselves. From swaying fabrics to bold colors and prints, each person paints themselves…perhaps far more interestingly than the art that hangs on the walls around them.

An Evening Celebrating Hal Rubenstein’s “100 Unforgettable Dresses”

Last night, Fashion School Daily had the pleasure of attending a spectacular event – the celebration of Hal Rubenstein’s new book, 100 Unforgettable Dresses. The soirée was hosted by Vanessa Getty and the Giorgio Armani store, where guests convened to toast the author and discuss the 100 Most Unforgettable Dresses. Well, maybe not all of them, but the author touched on quite a few.

Mrs. Getty began the discussion by asking the author what had inspired him to write this book – to which he had a surprising answer. Mr. Rubenstein had been approached by Rizzoli to create a book about 100 dresses, to which he replied, “No, that’s too boring.” But as the editor thought more about the book, he formed an idea that would allow him to write a book that was truly interesting, not just something that sits on your bookshelf and looks pretty. He explained, “I started out as a journalist, and that’s what I am at heart. I love fashion, but I love telling stories more.” It is this journalistic approach that makes the book so appealing, and sets it apart from its peers. Each dress in the book has a captivating story behind it, beautifully narrated and full of anecdotes and clever quips that only a fashion insider would know.

When asked, “What makes an unforgettable dress?” Rubenstein’s reply was threefold: “The right dress, on the right woman, at the right time.” He gave the example of Jennifer Lopez’s pivotal moment from the 2000 Grammys, when she wore the green Versace dress. It had been worn before by Amber Valetta at the Spring 2000 show and again by Donatella Versace at the Met Ball, without causing a stir. Yet, on the evening of the Grammy’s, J. Lo hit the trifecta – it was the right dress, she was the right woman, and it was the right time. The dress catapulted J. Lo into the spotlight and she never looked back.

That Gal is Elsa Schiaparelli

The incredibly stylish woman above is indeed Elsa Schiaparelli – which was correctly guessed by Aja! (Sorry, we don’t have your last name on the comment!) Mrs. Schiaparelli was born in Italy, but her true artistic talents were realized when she moved to Paris. Mrs. Schiaparelli first began designing with encouragement from the famed couturier Paul Poiret. Unfortunately, after only a few years her business closed despite glowing reviews. Not to be deterred, she launched a collection of knitwear in 1927, featuring sweaters with surrealist images. Her first collection was featured in Vogue, and her career took off. She expanded her line to include sportswear and evening wear – a few of her evening wear pieces even made it into The Impossible Collection of Fashion. Schiaparelli was lauded as one of the most innovative fashion designers of her time, which brings us to the clues.

Instant Style

Melody Chen; Academy 3D Animation Major

Style Point: Fluffy Vests

Fuzzy Wuzzy was certainly one comfortable bear. You can feel the coziness creep in as piled knits fill the stores. Less fancy than fur the piled knits give off a simple laid-back feel, like lying on clouds; Cute, comfortable, conservative.

Tové Torree; Academy Fashion Journalism Major

Style Point: Animal Print shorts

Animal accents always make an outfit fiercer. Leopard especially has grown from tacky fashion to fashion classic; but don’t get too carried away, the best things are always shown in small amounts, as they say; and Tové certainly does the style justice.

Student Style – An Outlet for Creativity

The Academy of Art University is centered in a city so richly diverse with different people, culture, and art. The setting is a breeding ground for inspiration and creativity, which students take advantage of through their outfits. Walking past an Academy of Art University bus stop, the array of distinctive style is impossible to miss. Of course, some students pay special attention to their unique wardrobes and stand out from the bunch. After interviewing a few students I realized that the major they were studying was often mirrored in the way they dressed.

Madison Chertow, who is a Fashion Merchandising Major has flawlessly found a way to turn her love of fashion into a future career. Her major pushes her to think and breathe fashion, and she finds inspiration from practically anywhere. She is “always on the look-out, what’s happening, what people are wearing, and always thinking about how [she] is going to incorporate what [she] sees and make it [her] own.” This way her clothing choices depend on what she is inspired by that particular day. Her outfits range from bohemian funky to classic and sophisticated. Today, she has chosen to show a more conservative side with black slouch pants, a plain black tank top with her favorite vintage fur cardigan from the 20’s. Bold statement pieces are what Madison is all about. Her BCBG knuckle duster clutch embellishes her hand elegantly as well as her timeless, gold Rolex watch. This rare vintage watch was passed on from her grandmother and she says “it is my duty to let it live on.” When asked, “Are you going to pass it down to your children,” she laughs and says, “No I’m going to bury this with me.”

Astrid Andrea Orantes; Academy Fashion Design Major

Style Point: Blackout

Black is always in style. It’s clean, coy, professional, and simply chic. Think Chanel or Audrey Hepburn in Funny face. A ‘blackout’ leaves you looking posh, polished, and ready to vogue.
