Jack Mackenroth, Patrick McDonald, and Keanan Duffty

“The Academy of Art University fashion show is always one of my favorites at Fashion Week because the designers are ultra innovative since they are not restrained by the commerce aspect of fashion. It’s pure walking art. It always reinvigorates why I LOVE fashion and reinforces the belief that there is a promising wave of designers coming up the ranks. Plus I got to sit next to my friends Patrick McDonald and Keanan Duffty–What’s better than that!!”

“The Academy of Art University is always my most anticipated show of the week for this dandy, I love seeing the new talent, it is so inspiring. New ideas just float down the runway in their creations, I just adore it! ”

“The Academy of Art University does what no other college dares to do – it shows during New York Fashion week alongside the big names of the industry and truly delivers a dynamic show each season. Quite often the Academy show is more inspiring than many of the established designers. It is always my pleasure to attend the Academy of Art University show to see emerging designers in the making.”

Follow Keanan Duffty’s ‘Rebel Style’

duffty

Keanan Duffty a mainstay at our show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and a past guest of honor at our 2010 spring San Francisco Fashion Show, has started his own blog based on his book, Rebel Rebel: Anti-Style.

The blog works as an extension of the book and explores “the look that’s dominating fashion form the catwalk to the club: rebel style.” The blog is a look at what’s inspiring Duffty and what’s going on in his creative, yet rebellious, mind. Make sure you follow his blog: rebelrebelantistyle.blogspot.com.

A Guerilla-style Fashion Show by Keanan Duffty

School of Fashion friend, Keanan Duffty put on a fashion show at Lincoln Center this morning — but it wasn’t on the runway. It wasn’t event in the actual venue. It was on the sidewalk. Outside. Check it out:

Keanan referred to this as a “renegade show.” The models arrived by bus and just started marching around Lincoln Center with protest signs that had lyrics from ’80s pop songs by Kraftwerk and Adam Ant. It was straight-up guerilla-style fashion.

Follow the jump for more pictures.

Keanan Duffty Talks About Being a ‘Rebel’

keananduffty

Keanan Duffty, the award winning British fashion designer, will be a part of the huge guest list we have coming to our school in May. He will be doing a special panel discussion at 3 p.m. on Wednesday May 5 where he will discuss his book, Rebel Rebel: Anti-Style. Tracing the roots of rebel style to the music scene, the presentation will explore how fashionable music and “anti-fashion” icons, like David Bowie, the Sex Pistols, and Gwen Stefani, have inspired fashion.

rebelrebel

The book covers a wide range of iconic pieces that embody “anti-style.” The classic leather jacket (think Brando or Joan Jett) remains a symbol of “outsider-dom,” while jeans have been reimagined as a style centerpiece by every generation. The skirt is constantly being reappraised, whether it’s mini, peasant, or frou-frou, to simultaneously celebrate and subvert images of femininity. Rebel, Rebel is the anti-style bible that will inspire the next generation of designers, fashionistas, and club kids alike.

I know you’re craving for more information about him — so here are a couple of tidbits for you to chew on:

- He won the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award in 2003
- He is the Creative Director of “Keanan Duffty For Target,” which sold at over 1200 Target stores across America.
- He is the Creative Director for Ben Sherman tailored clothing, consulted for Nautica and Dockers, and collaborated with Aveda, Reebok, Gola, and Dr. Martens footwear.
- Duffty’s clothes have a celebrity following that includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Aerosmith, The New York Dolls, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Elizabeth Jagger, Steven Dorff, Jimmy Fallon, Smashing Pumpkins, among others.
- Polina Pfliger, a Fashion Merchandising major, interviewed him for our latest issue of One Eighty (the piece can be seen in the slide show below)

Here are the full details of the panel discussion:
