Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall ’12 Designer Dossier: Xiang Zhang

Xiang Zhang is from Shanghai, China, where he received a B.F.A. in Fashion Design from the Shanghai University of Engineering Science. He worked as an assistant knitwear designer at Nova Apparel Taiwan and as a senior knitwear designer at Shaghai Datura Fashion Co. before earning his M.F.A. in Knitwear Design from the Academy of Art University. Previously, he collaborated on a collection with fellow alumnus Louie Llewellyn, which debuted during the Academy of Art University Spring 2011 Fashion Show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. For his current collection, Xiang was inspired by Plato’s philosophy that the highest form of beauty can be explained by principles of mathematics. He used Plato’s theory of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the long edge to the short edge equals the golden ratio, to determine the proportions of designs, as well as the number of stitches and their orientation within the pattern. He used cashmere, mohair, and silk throughout the collection.

Simon says: Say Hello to Melodie

Director of Fashion, Simon Ungless will be giving us his two cents in his own series of blog posts titled “Simon Says” — and we all know when Simon says something we listen…and laugh…and sometimes cry…Enjoy!

It happens once in a lifetime – a girl like Melodie Monrose walks into a casting and lights up the room.

melodie

Wow. WOW. And triple WOW.

Melodie Monrose is 18 and from Martinique. She was discovered two months before New York Fashion Week and is signed to Wilhelmina in New York.

We had to have her in the show – so fresh, so gorgeous with a super cute personality and a French accent. What more could you ask for?

The World According to Harry: The Ming Dynasty

I knew that Ming Xi (a.k.a. the “Givenchy girl”) was going to walk our show at New York Fashion Week but what I didn’t know was that she was opening the show! It’s unusual and unexpected for models of color to open a major fashion show, but looking at Ming Xi’s reputation, she’s perfect for opening the show.

Now that Ming Xi is Simon’s newest BFF, let’s study her in depth.

ming-xi-1

Is she wearing a friendship bracelet from Simon?

Ming Xi was born MengYao Xi in Shanghai, China March 8. I believe she is 22-23 years old. Most models start when they’re 15-16—but that’s okay because Ming is Asian and Asians do not age till we’re 50. Ming joined a modeling competition called the Elite Model Look. Isabeli Fontana, Sigrid Agren and Charlotte Di Calypso all got their start participating in the same competition as well. Ming made it into the Elite Model Look finals in Sanya, China. They tried to make her name easier for the International public by calling her “Barbie” at first. But Elite Paris decided to call her Ming Xi—which was the most brilliant thing because Barbie has a bad reputation.

In January, Ming walked for Givenchy Spring 2010 Couture. Ricardo Tisci and his team are known for using models exclusively for Givenchy – and Givenchy girls are girls with strong bone structures and a certain dark and mysterious appeal. Ming Xi was the first Asian girl that was a Givenchy Couture exclusive. She not only walked the Givenchy shows, but was also cast to play a sensual girl-on-girl love story with Mariacarla Boscono on the Fall 2010 campaign.

This campaign was particularly controversial for the appearance of Tisci’s fit model, Lea T., who was not born a woman. This ad was one of my favorites of the season because they cast two Asian models: Ming Xi and Paolo Roldan (a male model who is of Filipino descent who has also walked a couple of Givenchy shows before)

Givenchy gave Ming Xi her first big break. She is definitely one of the new models to watch. Ming Xi did not get a chance to do Fall 2010 prêt-à-porter in New York due to her visa problem (don’t we all hate this?) Technically speaking, this season was Ming’s American debut – and what better way to strut her stuff than to open our show?

Harry and Danielle Gab About New York Fashion Week

Resident blogger Harry Go and fashion merchandising student, Danielle Wallis give a he said/she said take on some of the collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Rodarte

rodarte-spring-2011

Harry: Kate and Laura Mulleavy are California girls (in case you didn’t know). Northern California inspired their Spring 2011 collection. The collection presented different shades of brown wrapped together in Rodarte silhouettes. The presentation was embodied the California girl: the hair, the gold but not many models could pull off this makeup. Rasa Zukauskaite and Madisyn Ritland looked very comical. That goes to show: not everyone can be one of Katy Perry’s “California Gurls”!

Danielle: Each season, I highly anticipate viewing Rodarte’s collection. Not only am I a fan of their heels, knitwear, and textile mixing, but I too grew up in the coastal and forested Northern California — and therefore feel a connection toward the designers. I am loving their stiff skirts, woodland textiles, oceanic blue florals, and sheer white socks. I was excited to see their signature shoulder and stomach cut outs included in the collection, yet I’m missing their overly busy, textured layers.

Norman Ambrose Talks about his ‘Sensual’ Collection

During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Annie Wehby stopped by Norman Ambrose‘s Spring/Summer 2011 presentation. She had a chance to talk to the alumnus about his new collection.

p1020487

Looking at your previous collections, your European aesthetic is apparent. San Francisco is often touted as one of the more European cities, did your time at the Academy of Art University have any influence on this more elegant look your clothes are famous for?

Well I was raised in San Francisco and there is a quote that I love about the city that says, “San Francisco was the last city in America that stopped wearing gloves.” I love the idea behind this, that love for getting dressed up and presenting yourself has always resonated with me.

What are your main inspirations or influences in your work to create this “put together” look?

Well my grandmother and her wardrobe have always been quintessential to my aesthetic. She was a glamorous woman and from a young age I was enthralled by her wardrobe. Also my parents are both European, so that influenced how I viewed dressing and what was appropriate.

Who do you consider you customer to be?

My ideal customer is an independent-minded, confident woman. She is an individual. But not to generalize, she has to also trust my vision because I understand a woman’s body. I understand a certain level of taste and what looks good.

Who do you consider your ideal celebrity client, past or present?

Grace Kelly was always someone who resonated with me.

What do you think it is about your clothes that so successfully enables you to deliver couture quality in a ready- to- wear capacity?

Well my clothes are not ready-to-wear. They are couture. Everything here is done by hand. Every seam is hand stitched and every bead is hand sewn. That’s why I can customize each piece for individual clients. I can customize color and silhouette to fit the individual needs of the client. It is the quality and dedication to detail that allows me to compete. I am involved in part of the design and production.

Clientele start to come in and Mr. Ambrose excused himself to welcome them. As the models present the looks, he assures possible clients of his ability to customize each piece to their liking and gets up to demonstrate the intricacies of the design details and subtle nuances throughout the 28 piece collection. As Liza Minelli plays softly in the background, he is explains the “play on transparency with a sense of alluring sensuality” noting a French cuff or sailor knot detail.

One client aptly sums up the collection and indeed Norman Ambrose himself as she proclaims: “Audrey Hepburn, eat your heart out!”
