Monday Morning Photos

Today’s Monday Morning Photo is actually video – but we just had to share it with you as it is the perfect jolt of inspiration we all need to get through these next few weeks. Last week, Oscar PR Girl posted a video chronicling a trip that Oscar de la Renta took to Mexico last June. He was invited by Moda Nextel to present his Resort 2012 collection in the largest bullfighting arena in the world, the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City. In the video, you not only see the amazing fashion show – you get to hear Oscar speak about his passion for life and for his work.

Oscar was a Guest of Honor at the School of Fashion in 2000, and the woman in the video with him is Inmadulada Habsburgo, president of the Queen Sofia Spanish Intistitute, who was also a guest of the school at the time of Oscar’s visit.

His heartfelt words are truly inspiring, and we hope that they inspire you as you gear up for finals!

Oscar de la Renta Introduces “The Board”

The Board.

The marketing minds over at Oscar de la Renta, leaders in the growing space where technology and fashion collide, are giving fashion lovers a chance to get even closer to the brand. The Board, as it is called, is a virtual inspiration board – just like the mood boards created for each collection, only digital. They are inviting the masses to participate in the design process, by uploading images to The Board that are meant to inspire the label’s Resort ’12 collection. This latest social media initiative was introduced Tuesday, at the designer’s Fall ’12 Fashion Show. As the Resort collection progresses, they will ask for more specific submissions, such as ideas for color palettes or silhouettes. It will remain open for the next three months, until the collection is revealed.

Some of the best submissions will be shared via the brand’s other social media channels, which include Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram. Though the designer is not obligated to consider any of the images, it will be interesting to see what comes of the social media experiment. CEO of Oscar de la Renta, Alex Bolen, cautiously explained that the The Board is not an exercise in democracy – “There’s one decider, and that’s Oscar.” What do you think of The Board? Why was Hermione Granger aka Emma Watson crying at the London premier of the final Harry Potter saga?

Because she forgot the black and white fur by Oscar de la Renta that goes with the gorgeous grey tulle dress from the Spring/Summer Collection.

(It was hot….)

Buenos días mis amigos!

I’m in New York for the preview of the Balenciaga Exhibition at Queen Sofía Spanish Institute tomorrow evening. It will be open to the public November 19 – February 19.

chapteriv_77c

The exhibition was conceived by Oscar de la Renta, our Guest of Honour in 2000, and curated by Hamish Bowles of Vogue.

Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895-1972), a Spaniard, had been a successful couturier in his own country.

He left in wake of the Spanish Civil War and went to London where he couldn’t find any work (really?) In 1937 he moved to Paris where his first collection was a huge success (surprise!).

Diana Vreeland once asked what he thought of a woman who bought clothes from different designers. Balenciaga replied, “I wouldn’t dress her because it shows she is merely interested in clothes and doesn’t understand fashion.”

Clearly, Americans including Pauline de Rothschild (née Potter), Mona von Bismarck (née Strader), Thelma Chrysler Foy and Doris Duke understood fashion.

Mona von Bismarck’s red dress to die for

The Texan Claudia Heard de Osborne wished to be buried in Balenciaga because “If my dear Cristóbal is waiting for me wherever we go when we die, he’ll be so pleased to see me in his dress and coat.”

You may enjoy pictures from two earlier Balenciaga exhibitions in Paris in 2006, at the Mona Bismarck Foundation in March; and at the Musée de la Mode at du Textile of the Louvre in July:

The New York exhibition will come to the de Young Museum in San Francisco from March 26 to July 4 2011. Before that, watch out for Balenciaga-mania at New York Fashion Week in February.

September issue grade book: Vanity Fair

vanityfair

Cover: The magazine of high society, popular culture and style gives us a choice of cover for their September issue: Michael Jackson or Farrah Fawcett. We opted for the King of Pop. The magazine definitely gets some points for variety and a few more points for sentimental pop culture nostalgia. Grade: B+

Journalistic content: This is where the magazine shines. Of course there is a cover story of Michael Jackson – which is very thoughtful. In “The Boy Who Would Be King” (with photos by Annie Leibovitz), writer Lisa Robinson consolidates notes and interviews with Jackson to produce a great retrospective article of his life. The cover story on Fawcett is titled “Beautiful People, Ugly Choices” was written by Leslie Bennett and gives a look at her and Ryan O’ Neal’s life. Good content, not-so-good title. Other honorable mentions include “Out to Lunch;” an interview with Oscar de la Renta by John Heilpern and an interesting Q & A with Michael Kors. Then there’s the Best Dressed List – which is always a joy to read. Grade: A
