La Belle France:

Some scenes in Paris are belle; others, such as a Christmas shop in July are odd; and sometimes the message at the tea shop Angelina gets lost in translation.

And now the gals at Christian Dior Haute Couture F/W 2011/12 on July 4th at the Musée Rodin.

Let me say, right away that not the stars Jourdan Dunn, the moon Alexandra Tretter, the pirate Constance Jablonski, nor the clown Karlie Kloss can eclipse John Galliano.

My reply to the question “Did you like the show?” as we walk out of a collection, is: “To wear or to draw?”.

It is far more interesting to draw Paris Haute Couture, worn by exotic models than observing High Street fashion.

At Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture F/W 2011/12 we beheld some truly glamorous and gender-confused models.

The golden boy, yes he is a boy, Andrej Pevic was Gaultier’s bride last season, not so on July 6th; Benjamin Dukhan, with the full beard and a favourite of Jean Paul was the new bride. Willy Carter with the undulating Marcel hair and Rob Evans in the green velvet coat and crinoline were perfect.

Next week, from Christian Dior Haute Couture, definitely female…

Trust me. Going to Paris is a challenge. Returning, even more so. And once there, life ain’t easy either.

My luggage was not lost often just mislaid over and over and sometimes not entered in the “system”.

Two suitcases permitted from San Francisco to London. One suitcase allowed from London to Paris. Paid through the nose.

Internet in hotel room not working for 4 days. Padded to lobby at all hours in sleep-suit.

Very confusing. I draw by hand, with a fat eagle feather, add paint, pastel, glitter etc (Picasso said, “I don’t look for things, I find them.” Lucky Pablo –- if he had wanted to post a feather drawing he’d have found a carrier pigeon). Prepping a drawing that took 5 minutes involves hours of stuff: charge batteries, photograph drawing, download to iPhoto, enhance, consider, un-enhance, crop, email…

The fact is, as you probably all know, social media is for people who want to waste time because that’s all they have.

The first half of the Twentieth Century was famous for creativity in literature, art, dance, music, film, fashion. Everyone was not an expert, not even equal.

(Check out the 1924 Ballet Russes production of ‘Le Train Bleu’: Stravinsky, Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Chanel, Diaghilev.)

My Old Year’s Resolution. Turn off the BlackBerry and check emails twice a day and let friends, foes and followers on Facebook and Tumblr carry on without me for a few hours.

When I was asked to take over the School of Fashion in 1995, I suggested “Everyone must cut, sew and draw.”

Forget digital. Use your fingers.

Azzedine Alaïa did a Tom Ford last week in Paris.

There was no invitation. Only a guest list. There was no publicity. All the right people were there.

There were no photographers, only the house photographer. At the end, after a ten minute standing ovation, the Minister of Culture, Frédéric Mitterand finally went backstage and hauled out the designer.

Enjoy these pictures.

My trusted eagle feather is drawn to ink, ergo I draw.

Much has been said about body language, especially in the front row at fashion shows and I’ve probably said it all.

Body language among lesser mortals is also a challenge. The woman who gets a buzz cut and lets her hair turn gray; the arm-hugger; the mid-life crisis mustachio; the glitterati-gold tooth; the bikini-baby; the slave to fashion; the boss in boots; the aging beauty – they all have a message. And here is the subtext.

Found an eagle’s feather, the best quill for drawing with Indian Ink.

This, bird-brains, is an art school…

Try it, fashion flock. But first catch an eagle. They are out there, soaring.

Welcome to all new and returning students, on site and online, at the School of Fashion of the Academy of Art University.

I wish you a wonderful Summer Semester.

Please take a few minutes to look at, and listen to this video.

“Starry Starry Night” was the hit song when I graduated from St. Martin’s School of Art (as it was known then). It brings back memories of a hot London summer when we all set forth to conquer the world –- as you will, some sooner, some later.

Vincent Van Gogh is one of the greatest painters. Alas, he did not know it then and died before he was recognized.

Today, he would have been on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr and might have found a following overnight… he might have been happier but would have had less time to work. He might never have got around to painting Starry Night?

Happy Memorial Day.

img_8919

This is the All-American holiday that kick-starts the three-month summer, punctuated with food, and blurs brain cells until Labor Day. My contributions to Fashion School Daily will take a holiday – though the blog continues.

In France, the month of August is the time for les vacances, factories and restaurants close, Paris is filled with tourists and you won’t hear a French word. The French are in Phuket.

But June and July are still open for business as the schools are still in session. Ever wondered why Europeans are better educated? It’s hot, it’s Haute Couture but it’s French.

Summer is about memories. Is that why it’s called Memorial Day? Or is it to remember war heroes? Labor Day, we all know, is the last opportunity to be lazy. These are some of the mysteries of the American language, such as Town Hall Meetings — in a classroom — or a Field Trip to Macy’s in Union Square.
