New York Fashion Week Spring 2010: Richelle Valenzuela

06richelle_valenzuela1

Richelle Valenzuela (pronounced Ritchell like Mitchell), MFA Fashion Design, was born in Manila, Philippines and has lived in San Francisco since he was 14-years old. He was inspired by the structure of the gem-cutting diagram shown in his technical details. The facets of the gem intrigued him rather than the glitter and glitz. (All photos by Randy Brooke)

New York Fashion Week Spring 2010 revisited

It’s been a little over a month since we showed at the tents in Bryant Park. Since then, we have gathered ourselves and are amping up for our February and April shows - but that doesn’t mean we can’t reflect on all the love we’ve been getting from the press (and it’s still coming in). Take a look:

(For the video above, if you want to go straight to the Academy of Art University coverage fast forward to time stamp 2:45…)

From season to season, Academy of Art University remains as one of the most anticipated shows during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. This season, I have particularly enjoyed works by Amanda Clearly, her clever placed ‘cut-outs’ felt original and trendy. I salute the outstanding work of the graduating class, and wish them much success in the future.

Some of the students from the school’s multimedia department were also on hand at the show in New York:

In addition to video, our designers got quite the journalistic ovation - online and in print:

A piece in NY Daily News written about our fashion show

The tightly edited lineups shown by the seven MFA candidates from San Francisco’s Academy of Art University were original, well-made and well-styled.

Popska’s knits with their chaotic mix and manipulation of rich textures and multiple colours – from peacock-green and blue to orange, coral-red, rose-pink and nude – created an extraordinarily varied chromatic jungle, offering the wearer a new aesthetical experience.

MFA Designers love Dryel

The MFA designers decided to share an “industry secret” the other day, which is in the form of a dry cleaning alternative called Dryel.

We chatted with Richelle and Brittney about it and they decided to give a little demo of how the product works…

The final countdown for our New York Fashion Week designers

Sawanya Jomthepmala works against the clock to put finishing touches on her collection for New York Fashion Work

As Sept. 12 inches closer (if you haven’t marked your calendar already, this is the date of the School of Fashion’s show in New York) you’d think that MFA fashion design students Amanda Cleary, Brittney Major, Jie Pan, Kara Sennett, Richelle Valenzuela, Marina Popska, and Sawanya Jomthepmala would be frantic and unbelievably high-strung - but it’s the exact opposite.

Kara Sennett (from left), Brittney Major, Richelle Valenzuela, Amanda Cleary and Jie Pan gear up for to send their stuff down the runway at Bryant Park. (Marina Nikolaeva is also showing - but she wasn’t in the workroom when I was snapping photos)

There seems to be a serene vibe when walking into the workroom on the first floor at 180 New Montgomery. If they are stressed out, they know how to hide it really well.

“All of us usually work from about 9 a.m. to about 5:30 p.m.,” says Brittney. “At 5:30 p.m. they usually kick us out.”

“But we take some stuff home to hand sew,” adds Amanda.

I suggest that they try multi-tasking to get more stuff done, but Kara regulates on that idea.

“Multi-tasking is bad for you,” jokes Kara.

“Why?” I ask. “I do it all the time.”

“Because if you have too much stuff going on at once, it will make your mind all messed up,” says Kara.

Point taken.

The 7 students have been working non-stop on their collections since January. Their only day off is Sunday - and that’ just because the building is closed. They just continue to sew, sew and sew some more until they present their collections at New York Fashion Week. This makes me wonder: do these brilliant designers ever sleep?

“More than before,” says Sawanya.

“I get about 8 hours of sleep,” adds Brittney. “At the end of the day, that’s all you want to do.”

Come to think of it, they get more sleep than me.

Stay tuned for more coverage on our designers!

Alums take over New York Fashion Week!

home_content

As we countdown to New York Fashion Week, the School of Fashion is crazed with preparation - particularly with our students showing in Bryant Park’s big tent on Sept. 12.

The school is all a twitter as Amanda Cleary, Brittney Major, Jie Pan, Kara Sennett, Richelle Valenzuela, Marina Popska, and Sawanya Jomthepmala are putting the final touches on their collections to bring to the tents. In addition, we also have some alums strutting their stuff that week. Jenny Schweitzberger (2007 BFA Fashion Design) is currently working at Carolina Herrera as a design assistant and Alicia Kelley Lapp has created a line of jewelry for Phillip Lim, which will be featured in his womenswear show. And of course, Sara Shepherd will be showing her own collection.

We are constantly getting a stream of updates from our alums in New York, so we will let you know more news as it comes in!
