San Francisco Chronicle Studies the City’s Fashion School ‘Theory’

Last week San Francisco Chronicle reporter, Lorraine Sanders wrote an article for the Sunday Style section titled “S.F. schools put fashion theory into action” where she featured the annual spring fashion shows of five San Francisco fashion schools — one of them being ours.

Here’s what she wrote about the Academy of Art University:

Substantive style took on new meaning in the collection of Academy of Art University’s Drew Williams, who set out after high school to study molecular biology but eventually enrolled in the academy’s knitwear design program. Inspired by gel electrophoresis, commonly used to separate DNA, Williams created knitwear coated in silicone.

“My collection was based on science, and that was what I initially thought I would be doing with my life. … It was a very personal thing for me,” Williams said.

On the runway during the school’s May graduation show and awards ceremony, Williams’ clinical take on classic shapes mingled with ocean-inspired knitwear by Maggie Mo Luo, strikingly dyed apparel by Lisa Relth, and fancifully layered dresses by Brittany Burggraff and Wendy Tam.

Students Get Ready for Yigal Azrouël Internship

Yigal Azrouel (right) looks at Jannika Lilja work.

As you may know, Yigal Azrouël was a special guest at our Spring Fashion Show in San Francisco. Inez-Marie Galvez, Margaret (Maggie) Yoha, and Jannika Lilja were lucky recipients of internship positions with him this summer. Fashion School Daily caught up with the trio before they headed off to the East Coast.

What was your reaction when you heard that Yigal Azrouël selected you for a summer internship?

Inez-Marie Galvez: I was in an L.A. hotel room with my mom, decided to check my email via phone, saw an email from Sara titled “Yigal”, opened it and as I was reading the words, I started to say “omg, omg, OMG OMG OMG!” (in a gradual increasing volume) haha! My mom ran to me thinking something bad happened, like back home up north, but I couldn’t utter a word because I was in shock. It completely caught me by surprise because I did not expect, nor plan, to snag an internship from the show. I was SO thrilled that I started to tear a bit. It was a perfect moment.

Maggie Yoha: Shocked and excited.

Jannika Lilja: Excitement. I’m eager to start this internship and move to a new city.

When do you move to New York?

Inez-Marie Galvez: Realistically, my move would be the last week of June. I still need to plan it out more, I mean, we did just find out. You look at the calendar and realize that” We only have one month left before the start date.”

Maggie Yoha: I fly out on June 27th.

Jannika Lilja: By the end of June!

Other than the internship, what are you most looking forward to doing in New York?

Inez-Marie Galvez: I’m looking forward to making connections and getting back into my music. What a great city to combine the two.

Maggie Yoha: Living with a high school friend that I haven’t had much time to see in ages, being somewhere I’ve never been before, learning a whole new location.

Jannika Lilja: Seeing my friends who moved there a year ago and exploring the city. I want to find the hidden gems.

Dazed Digital Interviews Drew Williams

People are still talking about our graduation fashion show!

DazedDigital.com recently posted an interview with Drew Williams, who showed her knitwear earlier in May and received the coveted L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne internship as part of the Sister City Scholarship Exchange in Paris. Here’s what she had to say about her upcoming time in Europe:

I hope to learn more about myself and to grow as a designer. I am anxious and thrilled about going to Europe! Sounds stereotypical, but I fell in love with Paris on a school trip during High School, so I’m looking forward to going back and exploring the city further.

You can see all the collections from our show — including Drew’s — in the portfolio section of Fashion School Daily

Three students received some special news last week when New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn announced the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) 2011 Scholarship Award Winners.

Horyn, a special guest at our fashion show, presented the prestigious CFDA scholarships to Chris Li, Casey Evangelista, and Ran Bi. Li was awarded a $5,000 scholarship and Bi was awarded $10,000. Evangelista scored the $10,000 CFDA Scholarship for The Clara Hancox Scholarship Award for Menswear Design.
