In honor of Sarah Burton’s visit to the Academy of Art University School of Fashion, Neiman Marcus in Union Square came up with some tantalizing Alexander McQueen window displays. They featured look from the house’s Spring/Summer ’12 collection, gorgeous gold and cream suits and dresses that hug every curve. What we wouldn’t do to get our hands on one of those! For now, we’ll just have to settle for window shopping.

Francis Liang was inspired by the work of Jackson Pollock.
Here are some amazing window displays created by Russell Clower’s Visual Merchandising 2 students! The project asked students to create a shadowbox window display for a men’s or women’s fragrance, incorporating a particular period of art history or the style of a particular artist that matched the image of the brand and it’s fragrance. Students drew from a variety of eras and artists – and we’re seriously loving what they came up with! What artist or artistic period would be the perfect match for your signature scent? Tell us in the comments below!

You’ve hopefully seen the beautiful window displays that some of our visual merchandising students created for the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel, and now we have some behind the scenes action!
The students, along with their instructor Martin Zanfardino, worked on the displays for months. They made sure that every last detail was perfect, and their hard work paid off – the displays turned out beautifully. Just the other day, the InterContinental Mark Hopkins team tweeted “@aaufashion The windows looked wonderful this year- the guests are loving them!”

On Thursday, December 15th, 2011, students from the School of Fashion unveiled their window displays at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel. Since 2005, visual merchandising students have worked with the hotel each year to create interior window displays that highlight the hotel’s rich and exciting history.
Three of the displays are located on the California level and one is located on the main level. The main level display is titled, “New Kids on the Block” and showcases new employees at the hotel. The geometric shapes create a modern display that contrasts beautifully with hotel’s vintage feel.
New Kids on the Block – By Gina Chou and Kevin Mihovich. L-R: Instructor Martin Zanfardino, Gina Chou, and Jim Cardosa
On the California level, the first display is “Greetings from the Mark”. Set against a beautiful background of the Mark Hopkins Hotel in the San Francisco skyline, vintage postcards cascade from a hand-constructed mailbox. The postcards tell stories of guests’ adventures at The Mark, dating all the way back to the 1930s. Many of the post-cards were bought online from vintage dealers, and give the display true meaning, as they are part of the hotel’s story.

The San Francisco Opera Guild asked the School of Fashion‘s Visual Merchandising students to design and build a tree for their annual silent auction to benefit the Opera Guild. Student’s from Judith Zimrin’s FSH 499.10 – Introduction to the Reclaimed Object, took on the challenge and designed a beautiful tree. Students Amy Bloch, Casey Evangelista, Christopher Schmunk, and Teresa Reynolds used a reclaimed retro-aluminum tinsel tree as their starting point. They then created a variety of ornaments: paper maché eggs made from traditional plaid fabrics and old fashion patterns; glass ornaments filled with feathers, pearls, tinsel, and beads; candy canes made of pearls, and so much more!
The Opera Guild called to say that it is the only silver tree among all the other green “designer” trees, and that that they absolutely love it! It also stands a bit taller than the other trees up for auction, which is perfect as one student remarked, “Well, fashion models are always taller than everyone else!” Leave it to the fashion students to trim the best tree – congrats!

Halloween Windows Get Crafty
One of the best things about October is observing the deep plunge that Visual Merchandisers take into their Fall displays. The displays no longer skim the surface of back to school, but delve into a realm of dim lighting, goofy props, and frightening mannequin scenarios. Yes, you guessed correctly – it’s Halloween time!

Cole Fox Hardware
At Cole Fox Hardware, a dinner has been perfectly set for a mischievous villain. When viewing this window, you get the spooky Halloween vibe, yet the display can also be recognized for being simply creative and fantastic 365 days a year. My favorite aspect of this year’s window is the chain mail curtains!

Anthropologie
Shout out to my lovely workplace, Anthropologie, and our display of harvested gourds! Hand stitched and wrapped, the gourds and tree roots turn me on to picking a pumpkin straight from the farm this year.

Saks
Saks Fifth Avenue’s textured yarn brings back memories of corn and field mazes.

The Archive
The Archive always has a special place in my heart for their intriguing, locally made window displays. This year, a skeleton offers his tailing services to consumers. Suits from the Crypt, anyone?
Enjoy these Halloween-centric displays until next week, when I reveal more in the San Francisco area!

Energetic Angles

This week, I tried to contain my urge to write a Halloween-themed post and instead, cover other beautiful window display themes in San Francisco. (Since I’m one of those people who starts conceptualizing and sketching Halloween costume ideas in mid July, this has not been an easy task.) Visual Merchandisers seem to love their Halloween themed windows, but I couldn’t help but bring attention to the great work that’s being squeezed in right before the holiday display installs begin!

Neiman Marcus has infused a bit of youth and texture into their Geary Street window displays. And by youth, I mean that I feel a bit of an Urban Outfitters effect here with the raw wood, and I’m into it! The directions of the placed wood planks are dynamic and energetic.

A Sudden Fade to Black

Prada
Over the past few months, I was riding high on summer’s trends such as neon hues and bold ethnic prints. I was so wrapped up in donning bright green nail polish and textiles from Africa that the shift in seasons halted my fierce step during a stroll in Soho.
The visual differences were obvious: something that sets New York very far apart from San Francisco is the city’s love affair with the color black. And, it’s not just love, it’s almost like black is a molecule in a New Yorker’s oxygen; and something that I definitely see less of in San Francisco.
